With two months to go until Guernsey marks its 80th Liberation Day, preparations are well underway for a day of commemoration and community celebration on the island.

The performance, held on Saturday 10 May at 6pm in the Sir John Loveridge Hall, Beau Sejour, will celebrate the strong relationship that has been formed with Biberach, where more than 800 islanders were deported during the war.

The 80th anniversary of Guernsey's Liberation will give islanders a flavour of the moment when Guernsey was freed from occupation in 1945, through a historical re-enactment of Force 135's arrival on the island.

Sponsored by Collas Crill LLP for the third year, the hampers will be given to islanders who remained in Guernsey during the occupation or who were evacuated during the Second World War.  

A tea tent, sponsored by The Old Government House Hotel & Spa and supporting GROW Limited, is being offered by the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture this Liberation Day, as a quiet space for all. 

Groups and individuals across the whole island have pitched in to the Bunting Project, some getting their sewing machines out for the first time in years. 

This year, more than 800 islanders living in residential homes or attending Age Concern groups in Guernsey will once again receive special Liberation Day-themed hampers as part of the 80th-anniversary celebrations. 

As the Bailiwick remembers 80 years since it was liberated from German occupation, local businesses are being encouraged to play a part in the island's biggest liberation celebrations to date.
