Guernsey is participating alongside hundreds of buildings across England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands by lighting up in red, white and blue to commemorate Victory in Europe, or VE Day, and the end of World War II.
As it gets dark, Castle Cornet, Fort Grey and Beau Sejour Leisure Centre will all be lit up to remember the day Germany surrendered to the Allies in 1945. The buildings will remain lit in red, white and blue until 11 May, to acknowledged both VE Day on 8 May and Guernsey’s Liberation on 9 May.
Helen Glencross, Head of Heritage Services, said: ““Lighting up Guernsey in red, white, and blue is a powerful tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience shown during World War II. As we mark VE Day, these colours serve as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude for all who fought for freedom and helped shape the peace we enjoy today. This marks the beginning of a fantastic weekend of celebrations being planned to mark Guernsey’s Liberation.”
